Mystery Fig Tree

Mystery Fig Tree

No, this is not a new cultivar named ‘Mystery’. Every now and then a plant loses its label and while we could guess based on leaf shape and fruit, we prefer to be overly cautious and either toss them or sell them at a discount. So take a chance on a mystery fig! They’ll still make great rootstock if you want to use them as that, or you might accidentally find your new favorite fig.

This batch of mystery figs is either I-376 or I-258. There was a mixed flat and because we weren’t sure which was which we decided they’re going to the mystery bin.

Fig Mosaic Virus is a benign virus that exists in all cultivated fig trees. Yellow spotting of the leaves is a cosmetic symptom that shows more in container culture, but is quickly outgrown once trees are planted in the ground. The presence of FMV in all cultivated figs has become widely accepted, as even the national germplasm repository for figs maintained by the USDA has Fig Mosaic Virus. If the presence of FMV is a concern, then purchasing fig trees may not be the best option for you.
