Edible Landscaping

Edible-Landscaping

We often hear this question: ” What is edible landscaping and how can I incorporate it into my home’s landscape?”

Edible landscaping is nothing new, in fact it used to the norm. Many of our parents and grandparents in addition to vegetable gardens they filled their yards with herbs, berries and fruit trees. With the mass production of our food chain in modern times, we had gotten away from our making our landscaping edible.

According to Rosalind Creasy’s web page “edible landscaping is the practical integration of food plants within an ornamental or decorative setting. The same design principles as for ornamental landscapes are used, while substituting edible plants such as lettuces, blueberries, vegetables and fruit trees for some of the otherwise unproductive plant material.”

Today’s edible landscaping

Today many of us are realizing the importance and joy of having lawns that are much more than ornamental.

Starting small is a good idea. A small trellis for vining plants such as kiwi and  perhaps some small containers for cilantro, basil and other fresh herbs.

Not all edibles are suited to act as ornamentation so be sure to speak with one of our landscaping designers.

Another thing to keep in mind when planning your edible landscaping is your climate. Make sure to choose plants that are compatible with your environment. You can find out your growing zone by clicking here to view the US Plant Hardiness Zone map.
