Aronia (Aronia melanocarpa) is a North American native that has become very popular throughout the world. Come spring, these bushes are covered with large snowy white flowers followed by black berries in the summer. The grand finale is the striking, fire-engine-red foliage in the fall. Very nutritious, high in antioxidants and anthocyanins, making them a perfect contender for syrups, jams, and other preserves!

Aronia is often called chokeberry for its astringent flavor when eaten fresh, but once rendered, it has a deliciously complex berry flavor! This week with the harvest we have at our nursery, we made Aronia Berry Syrup which was a huge crowd pleaser. Follow along with our process below and learn how to make your own!

ARONIA BERRY SYRUP RECIPE

This Aronia Berry Syrup can be poured over any dessert giving you an antioxidant boost with a delightful flavor! We used ours to top off ice cream, lemon bread, mixed it with some lemonade, and ate it by the spoon full!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen Aronia berries
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Lemon zest to taste

Making the Syrup

  1. Pour Aronia berries and water into a sauce pan
  2. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10-12 minutes or until berries are soft. Stir periodically.
  3. Use a spoon or fork to mash the berries to get as much juice as you can.
  4. Strain the juice from the berry pulp with a sieve or cheese cloth.
  5. Pour juice back into your saucepan. Then add lemon juice and sugar and simmer for 10+ minutes until it reaches your preferred consistency.
  6. Allow the syrup to cool and serve!
