Winter is coming! For those of us who have already felt the first frost of the season, it can be disheartening. While many look to escape the cold weather and gray skies in pursuit of sunnier climates, we would like to offer a far cheaper and much more rewarding alternative:...
In our unique part of the world spring often comes not once, but twice a year! After our summer dry season is over and the rains return around the end of September or October, we are rewarded with another flush of growth and blossoming flowers from many plants in the...
It’s that time of year again in the Northwest. Our summer fruiting varieties are pushing out their final crops of the season, foliage is beginning to turn, and…the pomegranates are ripening?? Yes! You heard that right. We are head over heels about the success of this season’s pomegranate collection and...
Our favorite tulsi species for its intensely aromatic, clove-scented leaves and its ability to grow as a perennial if given a little protection. While most tulsi or basil species will grow to a couple feet tall and often die after flowering, the Vana Tree Tulsi can reach up to five feet tall and can easily be grown as a houseplant over winter to keep those fresh tulsi teas going all year long. Vana has the highest clove oil content of any tulsi variety and is exceptionally flavorful and aromatic when made into tea.
A fun new variegated twist on an already delightful plant, the variegated form of Cuban Oregano has all the intense fragrance and flavor of the typical clone with stunning variegated foliage! Creamy edges highlight the two tone green on the interior of the leaf and new growth is often tinted a bright pink. Stunning!
A most elegant and pleasing Milkweed species, the Mexican Whorled Milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis) grows throughout the West Coast and is the single most important species for Monarch butterflies in California.
Each spring seems to be busier and crazier than the last one. And each year we say it couldn’t possibly be any wilder than the last one but then find a hundred new varieties to grow and the madness starts all over again. These days our season really starts in...
Our favorite lavender for foliage, Fred Boutin Lavender features especially silvery foliage that really glows at the edge of a border or along a path where it will guide your way with reflected light at night. Flower spikes are especially long on Fred and the flowers bloom for a very long period. Not the most fragrant of lavenders, but the foliage can’t be beat!
A tough and useful Mediterranean herb from the mint family, Winter Savory is becoming more widely used as a culinary herb for its unique, savory flavors and fragrance similar to thyme and sage but uniquely its own. Grows well in full sun and well-draining soils and makes a lovely addition to the herb garden or Mediterranean border.
