One of the most exciting wild collected figs to come out of California, Black Manzanita was shared with us years ago by Mike Boss who had recently taken over Sonoma Horticultural Nursery. We assumed that this was another California seedling that might not produce figs without the wasp, but sure enough it produces loads of large and unique figs up here in Oregon.
An essential fig for short season growers, De Tres Esplets produces a reliable and extremely tasty breba crop as well as one of the earliest main crops of any variety we’ve trialed. Figs will continue to ripen again in fall for what is sometimes considered the third crop.
An excellent and underrated dark skinned fig that is productive from a young age. Produces both a breba and main crop and the main crop is early enough to reliably ripen here in Portland. Deep black figs are best picked when perfectly ripe and have a glistening and jammy amber red flesh.
A premier dark fig with excellent flavor, vigor and productivity, Genovese Nero Fig Tree deserves a spot in every fig collection. Deep black skin and a bright red flesh are flavored with an intense berry sweetness. Ripens mid season and holds up decently well to splitting.
Another strain of Black Madeira that is a bit more vigorous, Black Madeira KK produces the same delicious rich flavored figs as the other Black Madeira strains, but has a different leaf than the USDA clone and Figo Preto.
