A seldom seen variety that we’ve grown to love for its decent sized breba crop and bountiful and delicious main crop. Rosa Esmerelda is a reliable performer here in Western Oregon, ripening a delicious breba crop and, most years, a large main crop.
A great choice for short season fig growers, Norman’s Yellow is a San Pedro fig that produces a prolific and delicious breba crop that is similar to Desert King but with more of a honey flavor. Norman’s Yellow will not produce the main crop unless it’s pollinated by the fig wasp.
A unique striped fig that has quickly become one of our favorites. Similar to Martinenca Rimada, it starts with green and yellow striping before ripening to have purple and red stripes and eventually is almost all purple when fully ripe. Really excellent flavor on this one, though it is a bit late for us here. In a hot urban microclimate it will ripen in favorable years, but otherwise needs a greenhouse or warmer climate to really be a reliable fig.
A beautifully striped fig that has a very stable variegation on its figs. Very similar to Panache, and many folks say they’re the same, but we’ve always had our stock plants labeled different and it does seem like the Bordissot Blanca Rimada ripens a bit earlier than Panache.
The variegated form of the Jolly Tiger fig tree, or at least variegated for now. We’ve found it to be a very unstable variegation, but for those of you that are dying to have a fig with variegated foliage, here it is. Growing it in partial shade might help it to not revert as quickly, but don’t say we didn’t warn you if it begins producing all green leaves in time. The figs themselves are striped even when the foliage reverts and it is an excellent fig.
A fig we’ve grown for years but rarely tasted as the main crop is too late for us most years here. It does ripen a small breba crop that is quite delicious with a nice thick skin and good texture. The main crop is one of the most prolific of any fig we grow with figs at every node and it’s a vigorous grower too.
Very cool ornamental fig that we grow just for the funky foliage that looking almost more like Ficus afghanistanica than Ficus carica. As far as we’ve been able to tell, this clone does not produce figs without pollination. We’re sure if it’s even a female fig, it could be a caprifig but we haven’t cut open any dropped figs. Growers folks in California and other Blastophaga blessed regions might get edible figs off this, otherwise it is a funky addition to the landscape for its unique foliage.
One of our favorite figs we’ve grown of the infamous Monsterat Pons collection. Borda Barraquer has everything we love in a fig, deep black almost blue skin, deep jammy rich flesh, it’s easy to grow, produces both a breba and a main crop and the flavor is out of this world. We’re planting lots of this one!
A real winner for short season fig growers, Raasti is a delicious honey fig that produces not only an excellent and prolific breba crop but also one of the earliest main crops of any figs we grow. It has a rich honey flavor and is one of our favorite light skinned figs.
An excellent introduction from the amazing Trees of Joy Nursery, the Dark Syrian fig tree has excellent flavor, ripens a main crop early enough for us most years and is very easy to grow. Produces dark, though not completely black figs, with a sweet amber flesh.
