Hakea microcarpa
Hakea microcarpa is an unusual and intriguing shrub in the Protea family that comes to us from high elevations of Australia. It has the appearance of a conifer from a distance, with leaves that are spiky phyllodes, but upon closer inspection you’ll notice the cute little white protea flowers that cover this shrub in spring into summer. A very easy to grow shrub for full sun and poor unamended soils. This has taken the worst of our Eastern Portland winters and subfreezing windy ice storms without any damage. Beloved by hummingbirds too!
