Dark Star Ceanothus
Dark Star is one of our favorite Ceanothus. Compact leaves and gorgeous displays of incredibly fragrant flowers make a wonderful evergreen screen or privacy hedge and can also be used as a drought tolerant nitrogen fixing shrub in areas with poor soil or little to no summer rains. Like most Ceanothus, it needs zero summer water once established making it an ideal candidate for xeriscaping. Also deer resistant.
A very useful and beautiful genus of shrubs native to the West Coast, mostly in the California and Southern Oregon Coast Range, Ceanothus boast evergreen foliage, gorgeous purple to blue, sometimes white, flowers and can tolerate the worst soil conditions so long as they are well draining. As nitrogen fixing shrubs they also fix nitrogen in the soil and are excellent companion plants for other woody plants.
