The perfect tree if you’re looking for something vibrant to light up a small space. The variegated azara is even more unique than the typical green-leafed boxleaf azara with a stunning, creamy golden and green variegation that is very stable and creates the most stunning texture. The first time we saw a mature specimen of variegated azara, it looked like a psychedelic kaleidoscope of variegation and texture. The tiny leaves combined with the golden color are quite the combination.
Boxleaf Azara is a stunning evergreen shrub from Southern Chile and Argentina that features compact glossy evergreen leaves and the most unique late winter flowers you might ever smell. They smell like vanilla or chocolate chip cookies! Produces small orange fruits that are eaten in its native Chile. We’ve tasted them on occasion and think they’d make a wonderful jam, but we really love this Azara for its beautiful form, drought tolerance and heavenly scented bakery blooms. Hardy to about 5F and can tolerate a good bit of shade.
