About the Jujube
The hardy jujube tree is deciduous. It is hardy, precocious (bears fruit early and grows quickly) and produces an olive to plum sized fruit called a drupe that can be eaten fresh or dried, depending on variety. It contains a small pit. Crisp and sweet when fresh, the fruit has been compared to a drier exotic apple. The sugar content of the fruit is consistently in the 20’s on the Brix scale and that value increases as the fruit dries. Some varieties are best fresh, some best dried and some are multi-purpose.
History of the Jujube
Ancient Chinese literature from 900 BC has documented the jujube fruit sustaining and providing health benefits to people on the continent of Asia for thousands of years. The benefits beyond sustenance of this ancient fruit are now being shared outside its origins. The fruit is used both fresh and dried as a food source and as medicine. The leaves, roots, fruits and pits from the fruit have also been used medicinally. The fruit and tree are revered throughout China.
