Arbutus x andrachnoides
Arbutus x andrachnoides is a very cool hybrid between Arbutus unedo and Arbutus andrachne, there are a variety of forms of this naturally occurring and garden originating hybrid, this one we got from the wonderful Woodlanders Nursery in South Carolina years ago and it has been growing in the border along the nursery driveway for years and has survived every winter storm that has come its way along with a good bit of incidental irrigation from the nearby nursery tables. This hybrid can come in many forms, some looking more like Arbutus andrachne and others looking more like Arbutus unedo. This one is in the latter camp, looking much like the typical strawberry tree , but we’re hoping for more flakey bark with great age.
