Tejocote Tree, also known as manzanita or Mexican Hawthorn, is perhaps the most delicious of any of the edible hawthorn species and has long been valued by the people of Mexico where it is used to make a traditional drink called Ponche around the winter holiday season as well as many other candies, preserves and beverages. Tejoctoe is unique in its genus as it is actually quite tasty to eat raw, tasting  tropical and sweetly tart, and because the tree is evergreen. Tejocote is native to the mountains of Mexico and Guatemala so it is somewhat cold hardy even though it is a Central American native, probably to USDA Zone 7. Trees grow to about 15 feet tall, sometimes up to 20 or 25 with great age.
