Hershey’s Nursery Black Walnut Tree

From the legendary nurseryman and plant collector John Hershey’s nursery in Downington, Pennsylvania comes this superior Black Walnut selected for its large, easy to peel and tasty nuts. John Hershey was one of the forefathers of the modern permaculture movement and created one of the first temperate food forests with varieties that he selected from wild populations and farmers on his many travels around the United States. Unfortunately most of his collection has been lost, but plant collectors around the Northeast have worked very hard to preserve his botanical legacy. We’re very excited to offer one of his excellent nut varieties.

A stately ornamental and one of the most valuable timber trees, Black Walnut grows very well in the Northwest as well as in other regions of the U.S. Capable of growing to 60 ft. or more in height, Black Walnut’s broad spreading form is awe inspiring. For timber production, trees should be planted close together to encourage upright growth and straight trunks. Plant young trees 10 ft. apart and later thin them twice, to eventually leave trees at a 40 ft. spacing. Black Walnut nuts are rich and flavorful, great for fresh eating and in baked goods. These 1 year seedlings are 18-24″ in height and well-rooted.
