Jujube

A striking ornamental as well as fruiting plant, this rare and unique small tree displays attractive contorted branches, fine lacy foliage, and abundant small, fragrant, white flowers which bloom in mid-summer. Also known as Chinese Date, Jujube’s unique and tasty fruit becomes reddish brown when ripe, with a sweet apple-like flavor and crisp texture. In its native China, it is eaten fresh or dried. We have tried it pitted and soaked in sugar until the flesh becomes somewhat translucent. A delectable treat! Jujube is very attractive to bees and produces delicious late-summer honey. Easy to grow, Jujube can stand some drought and grows well in the Northwest as well as in other regions of the US.
