Chinese Haw

Known in China as Shan Zha, we saw this fruit for the first time in 1999 as we traveled through Northern China. Growing to be an attractive, small to medium size tree, Chinese Haw bears heavy crops of round, large, 1-1/2" diameter, dark red fruit. Ripening in September, this flavorful fruit is eaten fresh, dried, stewed, and made into candy. Chinese Haw has beautiful reddish foliage in the fall in addition to making a striking sight when it is covered with fruit.
